Basslink Terrestrial Interconnector Gippsland

Daly’s Constructions constructed this project for Prysmian (formerly Pirelli) in Gippsland, Victoria.
The project involved the installation of 6.5km 400kV DC link consisting of a main positive cable, negative cable and associated communications and thermal sensing cables.
Stringent quality control methods were in place to ensure specifications were met or exceeded. Many new and innovative work methods were introduced to counter manual handling issues associated with such large cables (50kg/metre). This project achieved all health, safety and environmental targets whilst production targets were ahead of schedule.
Challicum Hill Wind Farm Ararat

Client: Alstom Australia
Daly’s Constructions completed this project for Alstom Australia in Ararat, Victoria. The project required open trenching for approximately 14km, predominantly through rock.
A HV cable, fibre optic and earth cable were direct buried, linking individual turbines to the main switch room. Cables were bedded in sand and protected with cover slabs and marker tape. Our cable jointers performed all HV indoor terminations and straight joints.
The cable route consisted of extremely steep and rocky terrain. This necessitated modifications to our tractor/HV jinker combination to enable controlled flaking of cable into trenches.
Cable installation was performed simultaneously with turbine foundation construction and erection. Detailed planning was required to ensure uninterrupted access for associated construction works.
CityGrid Dual Circuit 110kV Underground Cable System Brisbane

Client: Olex Cables/Energex
Daly’s Constructions completed this project for Olex Cables / Energex in Brisbane, Queensland. The project was a turnkey design and construction project, 12.5km in length, consisting of a fully conduited system from Carindale to the Charlotte St Substation in Brisbane’s CBD.
Extensive planning and communication to all stakeholders was critical in delivering this project along with detailed traffic management plans and setups. Ironman barriers were used broadly throughout this project in built-up residential and commercial areas, which was a first for Queensland.
The project included three major directional drills, installation of the cable fixed to the Captain Cook Bridge cable gantry and the construction of sixteen joint bays. The majority of cable hauls were 870 metres in length. Specialised plant and equipment was developed for the project including a motorised drum stand mounted on a low loader and custom-built cranage at our depot.
WMTS-JA No: 1, 66kV Circuit Melbourne

Client: CitiPower/Powercor Australia
Daly’s Constructions completed this project for CitiPower / Powercor in the Melbourne CBD, Victoria. The project was a Citipower/Powercor joint project and involved the installation of a new underground circuit within conduits for approximately 3.3km.
This was a turnkey project requiring system design, route selection, procurement, installation and termination works. The longest pulls were approximately 1,000 metres within conduit requiring the installation and operation of multiple caterpillars at strategic locations to ensure pulling tensions were not exceeded.
The project required significant traffic management and detailed planning with statutory authorities given the extreme volume of traffic on Spencer Street, Melbourne.
Shared Tunnel Installation Sydney
NSW 2003
Client: Energy Australia
Daly’s Constructions completed this project for Energy Australia in Sydney, NSW. The project required the installation of four separate 132kV circuits within a new tunnel from Haymarket Substation through individual hauling chambers to transition joint bays at road level.
The pulls were approximately 800 metres in length and cables were installed on rollers assisted by four caterpillars hydraulically linked to be operated from a central designated location.
Specialised equipment was supplied to lift the cables from the rollers onto support brackets mounted on tunnel walls. The equipment was engineered to facilitate snaking of the cable whilst placing them onto support brackets. The snaking of cables was critical to cater for expansion and contraction during cable operation.
Submarine 22kV Cable Installation Tamar River
Tasmania 2007
Client: Olex Cables/Aurora Energy
Daly’s Constructions completed this project for Olex Cables/Aurora Energy in Tasmania. The project was a turnkey design and construction project, 3 kilometres in length, consisting of 1,300 metre land cable installation, an 890 metre submarine crossing of the Tamar River and a 780 metre submarine crossing of the West Arm.
The first submarine cable was installed across West Arm, a shallow estuary at 6 metres depth, with 2 knot currents. The methodology chosen for the crossing was to float the cable using Daly’s designed and manufactured cable pillow floats.
The second submarine cable crossed the Tamar River at 40 metre depths, with 3 knot currents. The methodology chosen for this crossing was a barge lay.
The project was delivered on time and in accordance with the strict environmental conditions identified by the Tasmanian Department of Primary Industries and Water.
Nudgee - Myrletown, Dual Circuit 110kV Undergournd Cable System
Brisbane, Queensland 2008
Client: Olex Cables/Energex
Daly’s Constructions are in the process of completing this project for Olex Cables/Energex. This project is a turnkey design and construction project, 6.2km in length, consisting of a fully conduited system from Nudgee Substation to the Pinkenba termination structures.
Extensive stakeholder management, planning and contract management is required as the project transverses the Brisbane Airport and federally administered land. Numerous extraordinary permits and licences are required. Significant environmental management is also required; in particular the management of Acid Sulphate Soils and treatment and disposal of ground water.
This project includes six major directional drills, seven major sleeve bores (including a taxiway), excavation in difficult ground, installation of supersheathed cable and the construction of eight 23 metre long joint bays.
Docklands Electrical and Communications Infrastructure Docklands
Victoria 2002
Client: Powercor Australia/Transfield Consortium
Daly’s Constructions completed this project for the Powercor/Transfield Consortium in Docklands Victoria. The project involved the installation of electrical and communication conduits and associated hauling pits for a route length approximately 10km.
High and low voltage cable hauling was included in the contract with one of the cable hauls being 1,250 metres and included two ninety-degree sweeping bends. Specifically designed caterpillars assisted the cable hauling. Another cable haul of 650 metres was under the Yarra River at the Bolte Bridge, which involved hauling simultaneously three copper HV cables pulled through a PE conduit. The project also included the management and disposal of contaminated spoil, which involved the tracking of every cubic metre of spoil. The Docklands Infrastructure Project was completed on time and within budget and, most importantly, to our client’s satisfaction.
Highbrook Park Industrial Estate Auckland
New Zealand 2007
Client: Olex Cables/Transpower
Daly’s Constructions completed this project for Olex Cables/Transpower in New Zealand. The project involved the cable installation activities associated with the undergrounding of three existing 110kV circuits through the new
estate. The approximate route length was 2.6km and involved a double circuit and single circuit. The routes consisted of four sections – three of which were direct buried and one was in previously laid conduits. Each circuit also required
an optic fibre cable to be blown through a 20mm PE sub-duct.
Specialist cable hauling equipment and personnel were mobilised to undertake the project. An early major focus was the establishing of numerous subcontracts with suppliers and engaging the use of local labour to compliment our
experienced work crews. The working environment varied from open paddock to subdivision under construction to completed and occupied subdivision.
PE cable/phase spacers was an example of the innovations required on this project. The project was completed ahead of schedule, within budget with zero OH&S incidents.
